these pieces are from rajisthan and have very nice blend of colors and beads.
1) these are most probably decoration for camel but some time are also used as waist bands for skirts.the close picture shows how fine the work is of making tassels with cotton,wool and white beads.these are very long tassels are joined with a longer string.



2)the one picture with three tassels joined together is for women hair which is knotted with it and in local language is called choti.

It is an armlet from south of India Andhra Pradesh from lambada gypsy tribe. The red beads used in them are white heart which came to India from Europe in mid 18th century till early 19th century. They traveled through different hands and came to the gypsy because the gypsies are more likely to do barter (exchange only) system. The other beads are hand made white metal beads. It also decorated with old round buttons as well as white metal beads and cotton tassels.

we are putting up some images of banjaa embroided pieces.so,that one can understand it in a better way.

1.banjara skirt from lambada tribe of andhra pradesh.these skirt are worn at the time of marriages and ceremonies.

2.chakali from vanjara tribe of madhya pradesh.these are us3ed to cover food plates at tthe time of marriages and ceremonies.all the colours in these are natural dyes & the pattern of embroidery is cross sitch.

3. godiu(baby swing) from bhil tribe madhya pradesh.it is used at time of name ceremony of the new born child.all the colours are natural dyes and the pattern of embroidery is reverse applique on the borders and the cross sitch in the central part of the godiu.

the banjaras(gypsys) of south and central india

The banjaras of south and central india are situated in madhya pradesh, maharastra,andhra pradesh & karnataka.these gypsy tribes live in small tadas(small villages) and go around places with there cattles.there old embroidery is one of the finest in the world.
the banjara embroidery was made by the beautiful,artistic and creative banjara womens for thier tarditional and ceremonial uses.like marriages,dowry,name cermony etc..
the banjara embroidery is mostly in geomatrical designs(squares,triangles etc..)they rarely make animal or human figures in thier embroidery.they use a wide variety of sitching in thier embroidery like chain sitch,cross sitch,stem sitch,couching,kasida,straight sitch(quilt sitch), reverse appique & mirror work etc..
these banjara womane decorate thier embroided pieces with beautiful cowrie shells(sea), cotton & wollen tassels,old coins,lead & glass beads etc...
the banjara people used natural dyes from vegetables,minerals & animal origin,all of these are easily obtained in thier own vicinity.which also included the rare indigo dye.
the threads used for the embroidery by these womens were hand spun & done on hand woven cotten mostly.sometimes we fine silk and wool also used in thier embroidery.
